Why autumn?

Contrary to what you might think, this is one of the best times of the year to sow seeds and reorganise your green space, whether on the balcony, in the garden or even in a small corner of the kitchen. The soil retains some moisture, plants suffer less from the heat, and several crops thrive in the mild autumn climate.

At the same time, it's an ideal time to renew the substrate, correct water drainage, and plan what you will harvest in the coming months. If you already have a summer vegetable garden, now is the time to remove dry plants, mix in new substrate and prepare the soil for autumn crops.

If you are starting from scratch, autumn offers the perfect environment to take your first steps: balanced temperatures, fewer pests, and many species that grow easily.

Even if you don't have a garden, you can easily create your own urban vegetable garden and turn your balcony into a small green haven. The Venezia grow boxes and Madagascar to grow trays make everything simpler: they are resistant, have a lid to protect against the weather, have efficient drainage and easily adapt to small spaces.

Sofia used our 80 cm Venezia grow box in taupe to brighten up her space. Thanks to its raised legs, it is the perfect grow box for those who want to grow their own produce without the discomfort of constantly bending down. The Madagascar to grow trays, available in various sizes - S, M and L - are ideal for early sowing and even for monitoring the growth of plants before transferring them to the larger vegetable garden.

Passionate about gardening and the greenery of Nature, Sofia has created a real urban vegetable garden on her balcony, showing that growing in autumn is not only possible but also rewarding.

Watch the video of the process here.

Sofia used the Venezia grow box and Madagascar to grow trays to grow lettuce, coriander, carrots and chard, four crops that do very well at this time of year. The combination of the two products allows you to follow the entire cycle, from seed to dish.

"Some crops benefit from being sown directly in our trays, and only after they have developed a little do we move them to the garden. These growing trays are incredible because they have drainage and a lid that protects from the cold and conserves moisture, which is essential for our seeds to develop."

Tips from Tripeirinha

Choose what you are going to sow

This season, several crops love the mild autumn climate, such as spinach, lettuce, rocket, watercress, coriander, chard, radishes, carrots, and turnips.

Check the seed packets - some should be sown directly in the garden, while others are better started in trays.

Choose what you are going to sow

Prepare the substrate with care

For trays, simply cover the bottom with substrate and mix in a little perlite or vermiculite. Perlite ensures aeration and oxygenation, while vermiculite helps retain moisture, which is great for seed development.

Prepare the substrate with care

Water sparingly

Before sowing, sprinkle the substrate with a little water, without soaking it. After placing the seeds, sprinkle lightly again. In autumn, the substrate takes longer to dry, so use your finger as a guide: if the surface is dry, then it's time to water.

Water sparingly

Give them light and care

Even in autumn, your plants need light. Choose the brightest corner of the balcony and avoid direct, intense sunlight in the early days. When the leaves start to sprout, let them enjoy the sun's rays.

Give them light and care

Protect them from the cold

Winds and lower temperatures can affect the growth of your crops. The Madagascar to grow tray lid is perfect for maintaining humidity and protecting the most sensitive plants.

Protect them from the cold

Et voilà...

Growing your own vegetable garden in autumn is a simple and rewarding way to connect with Nature, even in the middle of the city. Whether it's to harvest fresh lettuce for a salad or coriander for that special dish, watching your plants grow brings a unique sense of well-being.
